Making Photo Cookies At Home

Photo cookies are incredibly popular. They are fun and because they are personalized, they make great presents or party favors as well. With photo cookies, you can commemorate a special event or a special person and really do something different for a change. There are various printers and bakers that are able to create these cookies for you, but you can also do it yourself, thereby saving a lot of money. Let's see at what sort of things you can do in order to make fantastic personalized cookies at home.

The Picture

The first thing you have to do is get the picture that you want to print. This is something you can do at home, if you have the necessary tools. Simply use sugar paper and edible ink, both of which are available from various bakery and craft stores. The other option is to take the picture to a bakery.

"If you "sweet talk" your local bakers they will scan and print the pictures for between $6.00-$8.00 a sheet. They will not print a copyright photo."

The Cookie

Making cookies is something anybody can do. You can purchase mixtures from your local grocery store, or you can really make your own from scratch. You can add certain ingredients, such as chocolate chips or raisins or smarties, making them more original. Plus, this will allow you to claim that it is your very own recipe. What matters is that cookies are amazing. They remind us of homeliness, comfort and happiness. This is particularly true for chocolate cookies.

"There's a time and place for a classic chocolate chip cookie, a chewy sugar cookie, an oatmeal raisin. But when we're craving serious cookies -- cookies that make us feel good, that make everything feel right -- we turn to chocolate cookies."

The Finishing Touches

You should now have your edible pictures and your cookies ready. All that is left to do is put the two together. You should, for decorative effect, get some icing, applied with a piping tip. Use this to create a kind of frame around the space where the picture is going to go. Once you have created this frame, you need to fill it in completely with icing and leave this to dry for between 12 and 24 hours. Now, you really are ready to put the pictures on.

"With a paintbrush only used for this purpose, apply a thin layer of clear corn syrup to the surface of the dry icing."

This will make the icing just sticky enough again to hold on to your picture. You should cut all your pictures to size, and it is likely that your sugar paper will have some backing, which you also need to remove. Then, simply place the picture on the sticky icing and apply a tiny bit of pressure to make sure it doesn't come undone. Start from the center, working your way outwards towards the corners of the picture.

As you can see, making personalized photo cookies can be quite time consuming, mainly because you have to wait for the printer and you have to wait for the icing to dry. If you don't have this amount of time, you can always order some from your local baker, or even online. Although it will still take the the same amount of time, it will at the very least leave you with a clean and tidy kitchen. On the other hand, you will then also miss your moment in the limelight, showing everybody just how creative you have been. Of course, you always have the option of lying about the origin of your cookies.
